History of the Winn Award Programs

The Robert A. Winn Excellence in Clinical Trials Award Program (Winn Awards) was established in 2020 by the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation to improve participation in clinical trials to drive better health outcomes in all communities to save more lives.

The Winn Awards are programs for physicians and rising medical students at various points in their career pathway. The Winn Career Development Award (Winn CDA) and the Winn Clinical Investigator Pathway Program (Winn CIPP) are led by a nationwide Winn Awards implementation team. The Winn Clinical Investigator Leadership Awards (Winn CILA) are implemented by collaborating organizations: Conquer Cancer the ASCO Foundation and the American Heart Association.

About Dr. Winn

The Robert A. Winn Excellence in Clinical Trials Award Program is named in honor of Robert A. Winn, MD, Director of Fox Chase Cancer Center. A committee of funders and program leaders selected Dr. Winn as the program’s namesake to recognize his pioneering leadership in advancing community-engaged approaches to healthcare. His work has transformed the way institutions build trust, collaborate with communities, and address barriers that contribute to gaps in health outcomes.

Dr. Winn also serves as the Chair of the Winn Awards’ National Advisory Committee.
